A dispatch from Tsingtao reports that 4’eak Government forces are falling back to shortened defence lines outside the city.” The first direct peace meeting between the Chinese Communists and Government representatives for many weeks was held in Nanking yesterday, when the Communist negotiator, General Chou En-lai, conferred with the Chinese Minis; ter of Communications (Mr Yui Ta-wei) after his talks with the United States Ambassador (General G. C. Marshall) yesterday. Each side, meanwhile, is accusing the .other of responsibility for violating the truce in central China.
