KEEPING ORDER IN PALESTINE
POSSIBLE PROVISION OF U.S. FORCES
(Rec. 7 p.m.) WASHINGTON, June 11. President Truman has announced the appointment of a Cabinet Committee to assist him to formulate and implement a policy on Palestine and related problems. The committee consists of the Secretary of State (Mr James Byrnes), the Secretary of War (Mr Robert Patterson), and the Secretary of the Treasury (Mr John Snyder). Mr Byrnes announced that the United States was preparing to discuss with Britain what military forces America might make available to maintain order in Palestine during the period of increased Jewish immigration. Mr •Byrnes refrained from giving any impression that he favoured making any troops available. He explained that the British had raised various fuestlons and therefore the United tates would discuss them. He said that the United States Ambassador to London (Mr Averell Harriman) was discussing with the British Government a plan for a committee of British and American experts to study physical and practical factors arising from increased Jewish immigration into Palestine.
