NEGOTIATIONS IN INDIA
Possibility Of Breakdown CONGRESS PARTY DEMAND (NJE. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10.45 pjn.) BOMBAY, June 11. “Mr Gandhi prevented a breakdown in the negotiations to-day by persuading the Congress Party Working Committee to delay its reply to the' British Cabinet Mission’s proposals for the interim government of India,” says the New Delhi correspondent of the “Daily Express.” “Its reply would have been a refusal to accept the plans for the interim Government. “A Congress Spokesman said -Mr Gandhi appealed to the committee to ‘sleep on it.’ The spokesman added that Congress would be thankful to accept an honourable compromise, but Mr Jinnah apparently was adamant.” Mr Gandhi, after conferring with the Viceroy (Lord Wavall) said: “We are exploring every avenue to avoid a breakddwn, but if the negotiations break down it is God’s will.” The possibility of a breakdown over the Congress Party’s demand for majority representation in the interim Government is freely conceded everywhere.
