BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Sir Cecil Whitney, who is in hi* eighty-fourth year, is best known for his long association with the Colonial Ammunition Company, Ltd., and lor his interests in acclimatisation. He has given liberal financial assistance in the importation of game and in the improvement of the sport of shooting generally. He became chairman of directors of the Colonial Ammunition Company on the death of his father in 1931, and held this position until last year, whqn he retired, and was succeeded by his son, Mr J. C. Whitney. Sir Cecil Whitney is still a director of the company. Mr Robert McPherson has been Wheat and Flour Controller for New Zealand during the war. In this capa* city he was one of the leaders in uje drive for maximum production. /On the formation of the Wheat Committee Mr McPherson was appointed secretary, and still holds this post in association with his duties as controller. Mr McPherson enlisted with the Main Body in 1914, and on Gallipoli won one of the first military crosses to nt awarded to a New Zealander m 1914-18 war. Later he was mentionea in dispatches. Becoming adjutant to the 3rd Brigade. New Zealand Artillery, and the Divisional Ammunition Column, he returned to New Zealand with the rank of major, and was P* o®* 0 ®* inent in the Returned Services Association before his official duties to occupy all his time. . Mrs Teresa Green is best known ij Christchurch for her benevolent ana welfare work. A Justice of the Peace, she has also given long service a s * Magistrate’s associate in the Childrens Court. For many years she has been chairwoman of the benevolent committee of the North Canterbury Hospital Board, which has charge of in distribution of charitable aid, and aisu the supervision of several homes xw old people. In the depression P er JJJ she gave notable service in the reiie of distress. Her husband, the late W. J. Green. J.P., was secretary of IJJ Canterbury Trades and Labour cil, and during nearly 40 years i Christchurch Mrs Green has been w active worker in the Labour move ment. She was one of the first womro to enter local body ■'work m cnrwv’ church. Mr C. T. Aschman has been pronun ent in educational, sporting, and w. body affairs in Christchurch for mog of his life.
