ARREST OF METAL WORKER
Attempted Murder Alleged POISON FOUND IN MILK BILLY Alleged to have placed poison in a billy of milk outside his wife’s residence yesterday morning, William Andrew Smythe, a metal worker, aged 51 years, of 69 Harper street, Sydenham, was arrested on a charge of attempted murder of his wife. He will be charged in the Magistrate’s Court this morning, when the police will apply for a remand. The police allegation is that Smythe, who has been living apart from his wife for 10 weeks, went to her residence at 9 Edenbridge street, Spreydon, abdut 9.15 yesterday morning and placed a quantity of poison in the milk billy, replacing the lid and leaving the premises without being seen. The billy and its contents were taken possession of by the police before they had been touched by Mrs Smythe, and after an analysis of the contents Smythe was arrested. The poison, it is alleged, has been analysed as a highly dangerous substance, acting, even in small quantity, with rapidity.
