SHIP’S COOK CHARGED WITH DESERTION
SHELTERED N.Z. SOLDIERS DURING WAR (P.A,) GISBORNE, June 11. Agryios Kandyllotis, a ship’s cook, was remanded till Monday when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court on a charge of unlawfully entering New Zealand at Auckland on May 31 and deserting the ship Sambian at Wellington on June 1. Counsel said the accused had given refuge to a number of New Zealand soldiers on the island of Calamos during the war, two of whom were Gisborne men who had identified him. Communists had gained control on the island and Kandyllotis knew that if he returned to Greece his life would be endangered. Bail was allowed in the sum of £lOO.
