Mr Smith held that the referee had been too slow in his rulings, and that some of his decisions were not suffleientiy definite, having been reversed by the opinions of one of the line umpire®. He said he did not wish to discredit the Auckland team, which had played fine football, but he thought Canterbury was the better team of the two. Four Canterbury goals had been disallowed, and at least two of them had been disallowed following the decision of the line umpire. In Mr Smith’s opinion both of these goals had been fair ones. Mr T. C. Gottermeyer. who represented the Canterbury referees at the tournament, endorsed all Mr Smith’s remarks.
