RUGBY FOOTBALL

CANTERBURY UNION MEETING OF MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE Discussing a request from the Otago Rugby Union for a date for the rriatch against Canterbury, the chairman, Mr W. E. Maxwell, said at a meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening that the Canterbury representative team would play Southland on August 24; if the match against Otago was scheduled for August 31. Which was virtually the only free day at present, it was a question whether Canterbury would want tp go back to Dunedin only a week after the match at Invercargill. Mr V. L. Jensen said it was a question of the players obtaining leave. They would ha've to be away from work at least a week. Touring teams formerly had been away for periods as long as three weeks, said Mr J. N. Clarke. The matter hinged on Canterbury’s challenge for the Ranfurly Shield, said Mr J. O. Hattersley. If Southland had lost the shield before the match against Canterbury, Otago would have it, and Canterbury would have a second chance, which was more than most unions would have. It was decided to refer the matter to the competitions committee, the selectors to question players regarding their availability. In presenting the competition committee’s report the chairman, Mr R. W. Blazey, said that the state of the grounds had caused some concern. At present the main grounds were not fit to take two big games, and next Saturday the six senior matches were to be played on six different ground?. t A request from the Christchurch Teachers’ Training College for the use of Lancaster Park on July 11 for a match against Dunedin Teachers’ Training College, was granted, subject to the ground being in a proper condition. Mr W. C. Dailey reported that the elec-trically-lighted training grounds at Hagley Park were now in very good order.
