SHELTER FOR WHARF LABOURERS
Sir,—l am impelled to protest against some of the remarks uttered at the recent meeting of the Harbour Board about the shelter for wharf labourers. “Belsen camp,” forsooth.! “Likely to ber epercussions”—from a Government nominee? and ‘‘Object to any delay.” Obviously none of the speakers has had my experience of four years overseas in the Air Force. My wife, an English,Army nurse for six years, and I returned a year ago and have since been living-under sufferance with a relative. We have since made every effort to obtain a home of our own. It would seem that a 70-years-old former hotel is good enough for New Zealanders to be born in and that returned servicemen and women may go homeless, but’a comparatively modern structure is not good enough for wharf labourers. —Yours, etc., THANKS, LABOUR. June 9, 1946.
