EMERGENCY LAW IN INDONESIA
ACTION OF REPUBLICAN GOVERNMENT LONDON, June 8. The Indonesian Republican Government has proclaimed a state of emergency law including the formation of a National Defence Council, says the Batavia correspondent of Reuters. The council, which will be charged with carrying out emergency measures, comprises the Prime Minister, the Ministers of Defence, Home Finance, Welfare, Communications, the Commander-in-Chief, and three representatives of peoples’ organisations. The correspondent of the Associated Press says that the President (Dr. Soekarno) warned that the Indonesians would answer force with force if the Dutch did not recognise their sovereignty. British Ambassador to Nanking.;— Sir Ralph Stevenson has been appointed British Ambassador to Nanking, in succession to Sir Horace Seymour. [Now aged 52. Sir Ralph Stevenson was recently British Consul-General at Rio de Janeiro. His consular appointments include service in the Ruhr (1921-23). Liberia (1924), Italy (1926-28), Peru (1929-33), Argentina, 1934-36), Spam (1936-37). and Russia (1939).]—London, June. 9.
