PLASTIC SURGERY UNIT

VISIT BY LADY PARK

The plastic surgical unit of the Bur«wood Hospital was visited yesterday by Lady Park, wife of Air Chief Marshal Sir Keith Park. Lady Park, who wag accompanied by Lady Wigram, president of the Norflti Canterbury centre of the Red Cross Society, and by Mrs E. E. Luttrell, who has been a regular visitor at the unit, for a number of years, was received by the chairman of the North Canterbury Hospital Board (Mr L. B. Evans), Sir Hugh Acland, Dr. A, D. Nelson, Dr. W. M. Manchester, the matron of the Burwood Hospital (Mrs K. T, Compigne), and by other members of the hospital staff. Lady Park spent some time in the wards conversing with patients confined to their beds. She also visited the occupational therapy department, and watched patients engaged in weaving, toy-making, and tapestry work, under the guidance of Miss D. M. Mars. Here she was presented with a toy lamb which had been made by the patients, and which she said she would keep as a mascot. Men in the woodwork section of the department were then visited by Lady Park, who expressed admiration of the many well-finished articles of furniture which the patients, taught by Mr A. W. Sellers, had made. Great interest was also shown by Lady Park in the making of artificial eyes. The process was explained to her by Mr W, R. Hamilton, who is in charge of the department. Visit to Red Cross Rooms From Burwood, Lady Park went to the Red Cross rooms to meet Red Cross and voluntary aid detachment workers. She was received by Mrs J. G. L. Vernon, voluntary aid detachment commandant, and by Mrs Herbert Smith, Red Cross depot manager. Lady Wigram, president of the North Canterbury centre of the Red Cross, in welcoming Lady Park, spoke of the wonderful work which she had done overseas, and also paid a tribute to Sir Keith Park. Those present included the Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, Sir Hugh Acland, Dr. A. D. Nelson, Lady Clark-Hall, the matron of the Christchurch Hospital (Miss G. Widdowson), Mr L. B. Evans, the commanding officer at Wigram (Wing Commander F. R. Dix) and Mrs Dix, the administration officer (Wing Commander •J. M. Checketts) and Mrs Checketts, and depot-workers,
