PARKING PROBLEM IN CITY
USE OF RESERVES NOT FAVOURED “Is this another councillor trailing nis coat? asked the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews) at the meeting of the Christchurch City Council last evening when Cr. W. L. King expressed the opinion that to provide for the parking of vehicles half of Latimer square should be asphalted. r^ T l Ji e Q¥ estio " was raised when Cr. G. Manning said he had noticed buses parked far out in the roadway in Gloucester street. Cr. J. N. Clarke had inquired whether the traffic committee had considered using the grassed portion of Latimer square, but councillors were apparently in some doubt whether this suggestion, from the chairman of the reserves committee, was meant seriously or was ironic. “Why not use Lancaster Park?” asked Cr. F. S. Wilding amid laughter. “He is pulling your leg,” said a councillor when Cr. L. G? Amos rose to oppose strongly any suggestion that reserves should be encroached upon for parking purposes. “Yps, he’s pulling our legs, I’m sure of that,” agreed Cr. Amos. The discusison took a more serious turn when Cr. M. E. Lyons declared that the council would have to face the problem of parking. A tremendous number of cars must be taken off the streets, but he would not countenance the use of reserves for the purpose. The council would have to establish municipal parking areas and the sooner this was done the better for ap concerned.
