BERNBOROUGH’S GREAT WIN
OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE IN DOOMBEN CUP (N.Z Press Association— Copyright) (Rec. 6.55 p.m.) BRISBANE, July 9. In winning the Doomben Cup yesterday in spite of interference, and the weight of 10-H, Bernborough ran his greatest race to date. It was his tenth successive victory, though he was running with weight and at a distance which he had not previously attempted. The stake money won by the champion now totals £20,952, including £llBl won before Mr A. O. Romano purchased him> at auction for 2600 guineas. The horse was closely watched by three detectives and by uniformed police before the race. As usual, Bernborough started slowly, but though the distance was 11 furlongs, the other horses went away as if it were a sprint. Out of the straight Bernborough was sixth, with Fox Breeze, Puffham, and Repshot fighting out the lead. Bernborough seemed hopelessly boxed in behind Wellesley and his jockey. Mulley, had to ease the champion and drop back in order to gain the outside running In doing so Bernborough was passed by Craigie and Tea Cake. On the final turn Bernborough hit his winning stride and rapidly cut down the opposition He was under extreme pressure, with Murley showing him the whip, but Its use was not needed and the result was not in doubt 150 yards from the post.
