ENGLAND BEATS N.S.W.

M ROUGHEST GAME FOR YEARS” FOUL PLAY THROUGHOUT MATCH (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Ree. 8 p.m.) SYDNEY, June 9. in what is described as the roughest Rugby League game seen in Sydney for many years, England defeated New South Wales by 21 points to 7 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Each team blamed the other for the foul play which was prevalent throughout the game, and several players were lucky to be on the ground when the match ended. Local experts who maintained after last week s game that most of England’s points were wrongly awarded, say of yesterday s match that the visiting team’s superiority was greater even than was indicated by the 14-point margin. The Eng--lish introduction of the stiff arm tackle, however, is credited by many with starting the rough play. The crowd of 47,000 was partisan, and at one time chanted the count as the English captain, Risman, kicked at goal. The quick-breaking English forwards caused New South Wales much trouble. The best players on the ground were the lock, Owens, and Risman. Exchanges were even for the first half-hour of the game, with England leading by two penalties by Risman to one by Jorgenson. Then came a try acclaimed as the best of the match, -when Owens and Kitching ran through from their own twenty-five. England’s second try, by Bassett, followed just before half-time. Both were converted by Risman. A vicious 15- ? minute offensive from New South Wales brought nothing but a penalty by Jorgenson. Then Owens broke from the scrum and got the ball away to Egan, who scored Risman converted. A movement by Lisle. Bailey, and Jorgenson let Cooper through in the corner for New South Wales’s only try. Risman kicked another penalty, and the New South Wales team was defending desperately when the final bell rang.
