REGIONAL SCHEME FOR NORTH CANTERBURY
“Not A Works Programme”
CONFERENCE HEARS MINISTER AND APPROVES PLAN
Unanimous approval of the principles embodied in the 10year plan for the North Canterbury region, prepared by the Ministry of Works in collaboration with the North Canterbury Regional Planning Council, was given by a conference of local body representatives and others interested in Christchurch yesterday. The conference was addressed by the Minister of Works (the Hon. R. Semple) and senior Government officers. It was emphasised that it was a plan only and not a programme of works, which would be drawn up from the plan. Some of the works might not be started in the 10 years, but the object of listing them was to have a clear picture of the general needs of the region when programmes were under consideration. The listing did not have any relation to priorities, which had not been fixed. Major works on the plan include: Land development on a big sjale. The Lyttelton tunnel road and three overbridges. New buildings for Canterbury University College and Canterbury Agricultural College. Railway duplication and a new line from Sockburn to Styx. A new broadcasting studio and a store for the Internal Marketing Division.
