N.Z. WATERSTDERS’ SUPPORT
IMPENDING AMERICAN STRIKE (P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 7. An announcement that the New Zealand waterside workers would support the impending American longshoremen’s strike, which may begin on June IS, was made this morning by the president of the New Zealand Waterside Workers' Union (Mr H Barnes).
“It is fairly common knowledge that we have been maintaining close contact with the Australian Waterside Workers’ Federation and the International Longshoremen’s Union of America, and the reason for the delay in holding the Pan-Pacific watersiders’ conference has been industrial trouble in the United States,” Mr Barnes stated.
“If, when the strike occurs the shipowners are successful in dispatching vessels through using free labour, they will definitely not be worked in this country. The matter of prospective support for the American workers has been referred to the International Federation of Trade Unions and my personal opinion is that such ships will not be worked by waterside™ in any country that may be affected ”
