LYTTELTON NEWS
OBITUARY Mr Robert Armour, who met his death by accident at Burnham yesterday morning, was a son of Mr and Mrs William Armour, of Jacksons road, and was born in Lyttelton 27 years ago. He attended the West Lyttelton and the Lyttelton District High Schools and was a member of the staff of the Vacuum. Oil Company at Lyttelton. He served for four years in the New Zealand armed forces, two of which he spent in the Pacific.
He was awarded the Military Medal for a daring exploit at Vella Lavella. He volunteered to penetrate the Japanese lines at night to learn the position of machine-gun and mortar positions. He got through safely, but found that he could not get back by land, so swam by sea back to the New Zealand position. As an athlete, Mr Armour was a weight lifter and held New Zealand records in the amateur light-heavy-weight class He was a keen Rugby football player and was captain of the Lyttelton Club’s team m the junior competition.
