CITY COUNCIL PROJECTS
RELATIONSHIP TO PLAN FOR REGION
The City Engineer (Mr E. Somers) explained to the North Cartterbury regional planning conference yesterday roading and other projects which would fit into the general scheme. The Highways Board plans a new northern outlet joining the main north highway at Northcote and the city at Cranford street. Mr Somers said the city was already starting on its share of this work by buying land. The tunnel road would take additional traffic into Ferry road, and to provide relief it was proposed to build a new’ link betw'een Ferry road and Linwood avenue, and, by completing Linwood avenue, to give a new route to Sumner. Mr Somers said a new route for traffic from the north would be through Fendalton, Upper Riccarton, and Addington to Cashmere and round to Heathcote. This would be a little longer than the direct route to the south, but would avoid the dense traffic on the city. Dealing w’ith the waterworks ornposals, Mr Somers said the city now relied on electricpporerw r er for puiiipiiK. If there were a bad electrical shutdown the city would soon be without water. That was why the Huntsbury reservoir was planned.
