Maritime Amions affiliated to the American Federation of Labour have called for a simultaneous stoppage of work at 2 p.m. to-morrow. The stoppage will affect 62,000 workers in all the nation's ports." The unexpected entry of the American Federation of Labour has con-, fused the maritime crisis and came after Mr Truman had called on the unions affiliated to the Congress of Industrial Organisations and the shipowners to buckle down and settle their differences through collective bargaining. Both sides are reported to-day to have made further concessions, but it is regarded as significant that Government agencies have intensified their preparations for a possible strike.
