“THREE ARMIES” IN PALESTINE
POWERS’ DECISION
AWAITED
LONDON, June 5. “Outwardly calm, the ‘City of Peace’ •is to-day the focal point of three armies organising for battle,” says the Jerusalem correspondent of the Associated Press. “Jews and Arabs throughout Palestine are awaiting the decision of the Powers on the BritishAmerican Commission’s recommendations.
“The British are reliably said to have 200,000 troops here backed up by bombers and warships, while on Cyprus additional aeroplanes are ready, and in Transjordan the Royal Air Force maintains others for training.
“The Arabs could rally within a fortnight 100,000 men armed with knives, revolvers, machine-guns, and hand grenades, with a fourth of the forces mounted. The Jews, 80,000 strong, are ready and organised in three underground groups. They are armed with aide arms, rifles, machineguns, mortars, and flame-throwers.”
