CUTS IN STOCK FOODS

BRITISH FARMERS CONCERNED

• LONDON, June 5. The proposed drastic cuts in stock and poultry feeding stuffs, announced by the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Tom Williams), are viewed with the greatest concern by British farmers. The advisory committee of the National Farmers’ Union will consider the position at a special meeting and the Conservative Agricultural Committee has already expressed the gravest anxiety. It is predicted that as a result of the cuts Britain will experience the barest Christmas ever. Farmers will be forced to rely more than ever on the resources of their own farms and ability to feed their stock will depend largely on their luck with the hay, corn, and root harvests. The cold weather during May has already prejudiced these chances. Another serious effect of the cuts will be to check the rearing of young stock. The allowance of feeding stuffs for young calves will be cut by one quarter and there is no allowance for older calves. Farmers claim that unless there is an improvement in the feed supplies, the country’s livestock will shrink to the lowest numbers ever recorded.
