The Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones) arrived in Montreal from Scotland on Monday in a Liberator bomber, according to an announcement by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) last night. Mr Jones was met by the chiefs of the Canadian stall, ahd went to Ottawa, accompanied by Mr R. M. Fifth, official secretary to the High Commissioner, and Group Captain White. On Tuesday Mr Jones called on the Governor (the Earl of Athlone). the Prime Minister (Mr Mackenzie King), the Minister of Defence for the Navy (Mr Angus Macdonald), and the Minister of Munitions and Supply (Mr C. D. Howe), who promised to do everything possible to meet our Army’s and Navy’s requirements. Mr Jones had discussions with Colonel Ralston, senior Minister of National Defence, and Air Chief Marshal Breadner. Yesterday Mr Jones met officials of the Canadian Legion of Educational Services, and received information on the system of education of service personnel, including New Zealand airmen training in Canada. Mr Jones is on his way west, inspecting air stations where New Zealanders are located—P.A. Mr E. D. Thompson, secretary and Crown representative of the No. 2 Armed Forces Appeal Board, has been granted three months’ leave of absence, owing to a breakdown in health, Mr W. Mason will replace Mr Thompson next week. Mr F. R. Picot, Commissioner of Supply and Steel Controller, arrived in Christchurch yesterday. He will spend several days in the South Island, and will return north next week. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr H. D. Acland was carried at the annual meeting of the Canterbury branch of the Economic Society. The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the Canterbury branch of the Economic Society of Australia and New Zealand;— President, Mr A. G. Henderson; vice-pre-sidents, Messrs C. L. Bacon and Vesey Hamilton: committee, Professor A. H. Tocker. Messrs T. N. Gibbs, C. H. Perkins. H. C. Brent, and A. H. Flay; secretary and treasurer. Mr A. J. Banks; auditor. Mr J. H. Pickles.
