DEPARTMENT MAKING CHECK (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 16. The manpower section of the National Service Department has been conducting investigations in hotel lounges with the object of catching day-time absentees from essential work or those who have taken no heed of their direction to essential employment. . So far 99 persons have been interviewed in lounges, of whom 48 were absentees from essential work or had been directed to such and had failed to comply. These will he dealt with either by fines under the regulations or through prosecution. Of the remainder. 22 who were not in gainful employment are being directed to essential work, 20 are under further investigation, and nine are visitors from other centrqs, and inquiries are being made as to their bona tides.
