U.S. MARINE CORPS
GENERAL ON VISIT TO NEW ZEALAND (PA,) AUCKLAND, June 16. One of the highest ranking officers of the United States Marine Corps is at present in New Zealand on an inspection tour ef Marine establishments in this area. He is Major-Gen-eral Clayton Barney Vogel, an officer with an excellent record and an outstanding reputation. General Vogel is aged 60, and has served in Peiping, Panama, Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua,' and aboard various ships of the United States Navy., Before being posted to the south Pacific area he directed the training of many of the Marines who successfully invaded’ the Solomon Islands last year. The last command held by General Vogel before the entry of Japan into the war was of a joint training force at San Diego. The command was instrumental in giving the Marine Corps a well-trained and amphibious striking force at a time when it was most needed in the PacificGeneral Vogel was born m Philadelphia, and entered the service in 1902. He advanced steadily through the grades until after 35 years’ service he was advanced to brigadiergeneral. Four years later, in 1941, he was promoted to major-generaj. He is married and has three daughters.
