The belief that Germany would crack suddenly and that Hitler had no chance of surviving was expressed by Mr Elmer Davis, Director of the United States Office of War Information, addressing a press conference. He said that the Germans would oust Hitler in an attempt to gain a compromise peace. Mr Davis predicted that the war against Japan would outlast the European conflict. . Although there were some signs of dissatisfaction appearing in Japan, he said that Japanese battle losses were low and the Japanese fleet was still strong and intact. Mr Davis said that submarine losses this month were the lowest since Pearl Harbour. While anti-submarine tactics had constantly improved, there had been a marked deterioration in the quality of German submarine crews. RECOMMENDATIONS TO MUSSOLINI MORE EFFECTIVE WAR MEASURES (Rcc 7 p.m.) LONDON. June 14. The directorate of the Fascist Party has presented a proclamation to Mussolini expressing determination to continue the struggle until victory is won. urging more effective rationing measures, severe and universal application of the laws enforcing obligatory work, suppression of black markets, and the repatriation or internment of all foreigners who cannot justify their presence. The directorate also asks for strong measures against any attack on the moral and spiritual attitude of the Italian people. If the present measures were not sufficient, then new measures should be imposed. It also calls on members of the party to denounce any trespassers against official regulations. D.S.O. TO GISBORNE PILOT SQUADRON LEADER IN NORTH AFRICA LONDON, June 14. An immediate award of the Distinguished Service Order to the ace fighter pilot, Squadron Leader Cohn Gray. D.F.C. and Bar, of Gisborne, is announced from Allied Headquarters in North Africa. Squadron Leader Gray has a score of 21J enemy aircraft destroyed. He took over command of a squadron last January. The citation pays a tribute to his aggressive spirit and leadership. South African Election, —Three hundred and thirty-five candidates have been nominated for the 150 seats to be contested at the South African general election on July 7. Eighteen seats are unopposed. General Smuts has two opponents, one a woman. The Opposition Leader (Dr. Malan) is unopposed.— Cape Towri, June 14.
