CHINESE GAINS ON YANGTSE
SUNGTSE RETAKEN (Rec. 9 p.m.) CHUNGKING. April 18. A Chinese communique confirms that Sungtse, one of the last Japanese footholds south of the Yangtse river (between Ichang and Shasi), has been completely recaptured. The communique says that enemy remnants are fleeing in great confusion, hotly pursued by the Chinese. Sinkiangkow, Mopanchow, and other strategic points leading to Sungtse were also captured The communique adds that the ma' i body of the Japanese which was engaged in battle near Chientshui, is retreating after suffering heavily. Small groups are being rounded up. The Japanese at Wuyi, near Kinhwa, in Chekiang province, were reinforced on June 9. and counter-attacked, but were finally repulsed, leaving many dead. • GROWTH OF U.S. WAR PRODUCTION (Rec. 9 p.m.) WASHINGTON. June 14. “Americans will spend 106,000.000,000 dollars on the war in 1943, an 80 per c f nt. increase on 1942,” said the chairman of the United States War Production Board (Mr Donald Nelson). “Munitions production is expected to rise 125 per cent. Last year’s production of 47.694 aeroplanes will be multiplied three and a half times in value and it will be substantially greater in quantity.” Mr Nelson added that leaner days for civilians were coming. Civilian goods and services in the last three months of 1943 would be 20 per cent, below the 1942 level. Pioneer Breeder Dead.—The death has occurred of Mr John Egerton Quested, a pioneer breeder of Bomney Marsn sheep, Mr Quested exhibited Romney Marsh ewes throughout the world and is reputed to have won more than £40,000 in prizes.—London, June 14. Surrender on Luzon.—The official Tokyo radio stated that the. remnants of the United States forces which had been holding out in the Neuva Vizcaya Province on Luzon Island, in the Philippines, surrendered with Filipino officers and all equipment. This had resulted in the complete pacification of the province.—New York. June 13. Arrests by Gestapo.—The Moscow radio says that the Gestapo has arrested Mr Tatarescue. a former Rumanian Prime Minister, and also Mr Burshan, a director of the big joint stock company Astral Wadory. They were taken to an unknown destination—London, June 14.
