93 YEARS OLD
FORMER CANTERBURY RESIDENT " The Press ” Special Service AUCKLAND, June 14. Although as- a girl Mrs Jane. Evans, of 59 Onslow' avenue-, Epsom. Auckland, was thought to be delicate, she long ago belied this reputation, and now, at the age of almost 93 years, she has remarkably good health. She will celebrate her ninety-third birthday on Wednesday. ' Born at Caersws, Montgomeryshire, Mrs Evans came to New Zealand with her sister in the sailing ship Merope in 1870, landing at Lyttelton. Her parents. Mr and Mrs J. J. Jones, emigrated two years later. In Christchurch in 1874 she married Mr Edward Evans, of Trefeglws, Wales, who had come out on the same ship. Mr and Mrs Evans engaged in farming in South Canterbury. In 1919 they removed to Rotorua and. three years later, to Auckland. Mr Evans died in 1934 at the age of 89.
