UNITED NATIONS DAY

w ■ ■■ OBSERVANCE ON MONDAY MILITARY PARADE THROUGH CHRISTCHURCH

In celebration of United Nations’ Day, a parade of representative detachments from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Red Cross Society, and St.John Ambulance Brigade will be held in Christchurch on Monday. A salute will be taken by the Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Nash) at the safety zone in Cathedral square. The parade will be divided into two columns—mechanised and dismounted. Armoured vehicles, artillery, and gun carriers will be included in the mechanised column, and the dismounted column will comprise detachments from the Army, Navy, and Air Force, the Women’s Royal Naval Service, the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps, the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, the Women’s War Service Auxiliary, and the St. John Ambulance Brigade and the Red Cross Society. The troops will be played through Cathedral square by the St. Andrew’s College Pipe Band, which will be stationed at the western entrance to the Cathedral. Marching with the troops will be the bands of the Christchurch Technical College, Christ’s College, the Christchurch Boys’ High School, and the Royal New Zealand Air Force. The route followed by the parade will be via Latimer square, Gloucester street. Colombo street, Cathedral square, High street, Cashel street. Madras street, and back to Latimer square. The head of the mechanised column is scheduled to pass the saluting base in Cathedral square at 2.20 p.m. . , ... The chief marshal of the parade will be Major T. A. S. McKenzie. M.8.E.. New Zealand Permanent Staff, while Captain E. W. Espiner and Captain P. H W. Nevill will act as assistant marshals, Traffic over the parade route will be under the control of the chief traffic inspector of the City Council (Mr J. Bruorton).
