BITTER ELECTION FIGHT FORECAST

LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL’S DISCUSSION

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 11. “My impression and my fear is that this will be one of the bitterest election fights New Zealand has seen for a long time,” said the Hon. J. K. Archer in the Legislative Council to-day, in deploring the decision to hold a General Election this year. He was confident that the Government would have the support of the majority of the people if it decided to carry on till the end of the war was in sight. Support was expressed by the Hon. W. H. Mclntyre, but the Hon. W, Grounds and the Hon. T. F. Doyle disagreed, the former saying that the Gmjv. ernment would not be justified in hif 0 f ], ing office to the end of the war, and fotsr latter that the people wanted an portunity to vote. The Leader (the Hon. D. Wilson) said that there was no hope that the election would be postponed. The council passed the By-Election* Postponement Bill.
