FOSTERING EGG PRODUCTION
GOVERNMENT’S EFFORT OUTLINED
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 11. An outline of what the Government was doing to foster egg production was given in the House of Representatives to-day by Mr Ben Roberts (Government, Wairarapa). He said that several thousands of pounds had been lent to applicants who were able to prove that they were qualified to conduct poultry farms. A special shipment of wire netting had been obtained from the United States for poultry farmers, and this was being allocated as expeditiously as possible. There had also been a special allocation to chick-sexers, 1,500,000 chicks having been examined. Indications were that there would be an increase of stock in the North Island this season.
Family Allowance An extension of the family allowance to all families was advocated by Mr C. Morgan Williams (Government, Kaiapoi), in the Budget speech in the House of Representatives yesterday. He said that the family allowance of 7s 6d a week for each child was a great help to the poorer-paid people. _ A generous family allowance was given to wealthy people by the income tax exemption, which, on the highest scale amounted to 15s a week for each child. Those who had least benefit were men earning between £4OO _ and £SOO, whose income tax exemption was equal to about 2s 3d a week for each child. —F.O.P.R.
Appeals Against Sentences Out of 32 appeals by prisoners against sentences imposed by judges which have come before the Court of Appeal this year, the sentences have been varied in 11 cases and 21 appeals have been dismissed. A prevalent impression that most appeals by prisoners succeed probably has been given by the fact that generally only successful appeals are mentioned in newspapers. The figures quoted are for the whole of New Zealand, the Court of Appeal sitting only in Wellington.
