SOUTH ISLAND RABBITERS
The first annual meeting of the South Island Rabbiters’ Association was held in Dunedin recently. Mr W. L. Anderson was in the chair, and delegates attended from Canterbury, North and Central Otago, and Southland.
Delegates criticised the Government’s policy in imposing a levy on winter skins, the proceeds from which amounted during the year to £60,864 9s lid. The subsidy received amounted to £13.190. The association expressed disapproval of the Government’s lack of consideration for a suggestion that a summer scheme should be subsidised.
A motion was adopted drawing the attention of the Government to the danger of enforcing the “killer” policy, and pointing out that rabbiting could not be carried out effectively on a 40-hour week principle. A motion was also adopted expressing general disapproval of the suggestion for organising the rabbiting industry by control through boards.
