“ DELICIOUS SPONGES CO ” CELEBRATES
Last week the manager of Delicious Sponges entertained friends, the occasion being the sharing of the millionth sponge cake. The staff entering into the spirit of the entertainment set up a wonderful display, much to the delight of the visitors, Mr J. A. Nuttall congratulated the proprietor. Mr White, on the success of his famous sh mentioning in particular a recent honour conferred. Mr White having been made a life member and patron of the New Brighton Band now incorporated with the East Battalion of the Home Guard Mr White asked Mr Nuttall to thank his band for the honour, and referred to the noble mission ahead of the organisation. He contemplated a trip to Sydney to play for charities Later in the evening, replying to a speech by one of the ladies, he said he felt deeply grateful to the people of Canterbury for the countless number of compliments paid to the sponges, especially by the fair sex, who were the best judges. He also thanked Mr H H Wauchop, Mr Evans, now manager of the Egg Floor Mr Harris, of United Dairies. Messrs J. Rattray and Son. Green and Co., and Abels. Ltd., for standing by so loyally with supplies when the adverse winds were blowing. g
Loan Appeal at Riccarton.—A special meeting was held recently in the Riccarton Town Hall to discuss plans for the Household Savings Day, to be held on July 10 in connexion with the Third Liberty Loan appeal. It was decided that all E.P.S. personnel in the Riccarton borough should be asked to collect the “promise forms" distributed to each house by the National Patriotic Fund Board, in an effort to encourage contributions from residents.
