CHINESE REPORT SUCCESSES

SUBURBS OF ICHANG PENETRATED HEAVY JAPANESE CASUALTIES (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, June 10. A Chungking message says that the Chinese in the Yangtse Valley have penetrated the suburbs of Ichang, the main Japanese forward base in Hupeh Province. ' The Chinese have smashed the enemy defence line south-west of Hwajung. north of the Tungting Lake, inflicting 400 casualties and capturing quantities of equipment. Chinese forces have also recaptured three important points in the northern sector on the upper Yangtse. To-day’s Chinese communique says: “Further heavy casualties were inflicted on Japanese troops fleeing from Itu. The annihilation of the enemy forces south of the river port of Sungtse (between Ichang and Shasi) is expected soon.” Another Chungking message says that the Chinese have broken through j enemy defences south-east of Tang-i yang. • The Japanese suffered 20001 casualties and lost much equipment. American headquarters for China an! Burma announces that Mitchells and Warhawks attacked Hongay, 30 miles north-east of Haiphong, in Indo-China, heavily damaging coaling docks, warehouses, railroad yards, and power transmission lines. All the raiders returned. “ CRUSH BRITAIN AND AMERICA” ADDRESS TO JAPANESE RALLY NEW YORK, June 9. Addressing a “crush Britain and American rally,” the speaker of. the Japanese House of Representatives, Tadahiko Odada, asserted: “There is no room for the existence of Britain. America, and Japan.” This is reported by the Tokyo radio. Odada added: “We must destroy Britain and America, which are cruelty and craftiness incarnate. The global war does not permit a half-baked distinction between victor and vanquished. It is a question of the survival of the fittest—eat or be eaten.”
