ANIMALS RUN DOWN BY CARS
PROSECUTION OF DRIVERS PROPOSED Motorists who run dewn and injure animals in the streets, and drive on, are to be prosecuted in future by the Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. This der cision was made by the council of the society at its meeting this week, when members stated that some cases were more deliberate than accidental. During the discussion cases were cited where gross cruelty had. it was said, resulted through motorists running down dogs and leaving them, often badly injured. The council recognised that dog owners should not allow their animals to wander on the streets, but considered that such neglect did not permit acts of cruelty. The society had an ambulance for attendance to animals injured on the streets, and three telephones were available to motorists to call for the ambulance when an animal was run over.
