VICEREGAL (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 10. His Excellency the Governor-General (Sir Cyril Ncwall) received the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) this afternoon. Later the Hon. W. Perry, M.L.C., was sworn in by his Excellency as a member of the Executive Council. Mr J. W. Dove has been appointed a member of the Nurses’ and Midwives’ Registration Board.—P.A. The appointment of Mr John William Macdonald, the present deputycommissioner and secretary of the Government Insurance Department, as commissioner, on the retirement of the present commissioner (Mr W. E. Arnold) at the end of this month was announced yesterday by the Minister in charge (the Hon. D. Wilson). Mr Macdonald joined the department at Wellington in 1902 and became de-puty-commissioner in 1933. P.A. The resignation of Sergeant Arthur Manawatu as president of the Christchurch Ngati-Otautahi Maori Association, owing to pressure of military duties, was received at a general meeting this week. It was decided to defer consideration of the intimation for a month. Pilot Officer E. R. Markland, eldest son of Mr and Mrs E. Markland, Hokitika, who was reported missing while piloting a Lancaster bomber, has now been reported killed. Pilot Officer Markland was shot down over Wilhelmshaven. Germany, on the night of February 18, 1943. He had taken part in 17 operational flights and had been recommended for and granted a commission after he had been posted missing. He was 22 years of age and was educated at the Hokitika District High School. He was a former employee of Air Travel (N.Z.), Ltd,, at Hokitika. Mr J. Murphy, of the Public Trust Office, Christchurch, has been appointed district manager of the Public Trust Office at Pahiatua, and will leave in a few days to take up his new appointment.
