HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

annual report “All the shows this season have been well up to the standard of previous years, and in all cases have received increased support from members of the society and from the public," states the annual report of the Canterbury Horticultural Society. The Bledisloe Challenge Trophy was awarded for the first time at the spring show, and was won by Mr G. Lewis, continues the report. Efforts were made by the society during the year to encourage the growing of vegetables, and a series of articles was printed in the “City Beautiful.’’ the official organ of the society. In addition, vegetable classes were included in the dahlia show schedule, and classes for amateur growers in the chrysanthemum show schedule. The committee, with the assistance of Mr A. R. Grainger, of the Department of Agriculture, issued a pamphlet on the canning and preserving of fruit and vegetables. Because of restrictions on transport, the society was unable to arrange a visit to “Otahuna.” The annual visit to “Ham,” Ihjß homo of Mr and Mrs E. F. Stead, was held as usual. Entries in the garden competition were well up .to standard, says the report, and there was good competition in most of the sections. The garden clubs also functioned successfully during the year. The present membership of the society is stated to be 971. including 80 new members. A satisfactory position is disclosed by the financial statement, the excess of income over expenditure during the year being £39 12s 2d.
