SEEPAGE

Sir,—The suggestion that I made some time ago that seepage would .take up in time in water races as a result of vegetation and silt entering and having a sealing effect was not viewed with favour by some of your correspondents. This is not a new idea. Fifty years ago I used vegetation with immediate results for stopping leaks in siphons and pipe lines in water races and of recent years-I have used silt and vegetation to prevent seepage with equal success. My experience is that with proper management it is possible to make almost any ground hold water, in some cases without manual labour. Although I am not looking for a job, if a small amount of equipment and labour were provided I would be prepared, if inspection warranted, to try out remedial measures to prevent seepage on a contract basis, if no success no pay.—Yours, etc., OBSERVER. South Westland, June 7, 1943.
