The annual report of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Christchurch Harmonic Society expresses regret at the death of one of its members, Miss Hilda Andrews, and extends sympathy to her mother. Miss S. McKee presided over a large attendance of .the Garden Circle of the Home Economics Association. An interesting talk on “The Growing and Use of Herbs” was given by Miss Millicent Jennings. A musical programme of. high standard was enjoyed by members of the Canterbury Women’s Club and their friends yesterday afternoon, when Mrs W. J. Watson was hostess at an informal gathering held in the club reception room. Songs were sung by Miss Yvonne Watson and Miss Phyllis Mander, and pianoforte solos played by Miss Lois Manning. Mrs J. C. Cullman and Mrs Watson were accompanists. Mrs A. E. 'G. Lyttle, president of the club, thanked Mrs Watson and the performers for providing the entertainment. At the missionary market, held at the Caledonian Hall yesterday, it was decided, on the suggestion of Archbishop West-Watson, that a letter be sent from the missionary committees in Christchurch to Mrs Sprott, congratulating her on having been awarded the M.B.E. Mrs Sprott, the Archbishop said, had carried on missionary work in the Pacific, under difficult and dangerous conditions. At the last meeting of the Sydenham branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, the president (Mrs Woodward) presided. Bible reading was given by Mrs J. Filer and Mrs J.. K. Archer led in prayer. In response to the request received from the Dominion Devotional Superintendent, it was decided to hold a short prayer meeting prior to the usual monthly gathering. A talk was given by Mrs Archer, who made brief references to the experiences of the pioneers in the temperance cause in Christchurch. Members of the W.A.A.C. in the Pacific have been assigned the duties of running a recreation centre and rest camp at Tonga, where men on the island may enjoy a spell from the routine of garrison duty. The scheme is being financed by the National Patriotic Fund Board, which has provided furniture, sports gear, and .games. Student members of the Canterbury Repertory Theatre Society that attend weekly classes conducted by the society’s producer, Miss Pippa Robins, gave a demonstration on Tuesday night of the dramatic work done by them during the term. Before a large audience, they presented scenes from several plays, produced by the students themselves under the direction of Miss Robins. Those taking part were Mary Thornton, Pat. Donovan, Leslie Holt, Ann Macaulay, Ruth Collins, Jean Morice, Nancy Mathews, Margaret Inwood, Dawn Kincaid, Diana Evans, Ruth Harris, Molly Gillingham, Hilda Thompson, Muriel Cochrane, Doris Stephens, Edna Neville, Marie Hall, Dorothy Perkins, Hilary Warren, R. Odium, K. Innes, T. Kincaid. Misses Inwood and Stephens were stage-managers. At the annual meeting of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Christchurch Harmonic Society, held in Death’s grey room, the following officers were elected:—President, Mrs A. C. Sandston; vice-presidents, Mesdames C. L. Peters, E, D. Pullon, M. J. Ballantyne, J. Hight, W. M. Hamilton, A. S. Elsom, C. G. Burgess, and M. Machin; secretary-treasurer, Miss Nellie Billcliff; committee, Mesdames C. G. Burgess, C. Davies, M. E. Lyons, E. D. Pullon, W. F. Olds. H. Davis, H. S. J. Goodman, H. Worrall, F. R. Dudley, R. E. Voller, E. S. Brittenden, Nqvejlo Andrews, B. McEachen, C. Brown, S. J. L. Hewitt, and Miss E. Orchard. A short musical programme was provided by Miss Billcliff, Mrs A. Wagner, and Miss Romola Griffiths.
