OCEAN AND AIR MAILS

VOTE OF £94,300 THIS YEAR Provision for the expenditure of £94,300 for the conveyance of ocean and air mails is made in the estimates for the Post and Telegraph Department. which have been presented to the House of Representatives.' Last year £172,550 was voted and £157,217 was spent. The largest item this year is £30,000, payable to other Governments for the carriage of mails by air. The amount payable to shipping companies is £22,500. The vote for the carriage of malls by inland air services is £16,000, compared with £IO,OOO voted and £13.140 spent last year. The increase is due to the restricted steamer express service, resulting in greater use being made of air- mail services. The vote for shipping companies is £12,000, compared with £14,000 last year.
