NEED FOR SURGEON EMPHASISED
POSITION AT GREY HOSPITAL The appointment of a surgeon at the. Grey Hospital in succession to Dr. D. Arnott is still causing the Grey Hospital Board a great deal of anxiety. The position was discussed at a meeting of the board this week, when, on the motion of Mr J. Smeaton, it was decided that if finality was riot reached before the, next visit of the Hon. J. oyßrien to Greymouth, the matter be put very strongly to him. The managing-secretary (Mr J. E. A. McKeefry) reported that the sub-com-mittee appointed at the previous meeting had decided to offer the position to Dr. K. N. MacNamara, assistant medical superintendent at the Whangarei Hospital, who had accepted and was released by the manpower officer to come to Greymouth. Several communications had passed among the chairman, the Director-General of Health, the Hon. J. O’Brien, and the Minister for Health (the Hon. A H. Nordmeyer). The Minister had approved of the appointment, but the Whangarei board had appealed against the manpower officer’s decision. The Director-General had asked the Christchurch Hospital to provide a temporary assistant, but the North Canterbury Hospital Board had stated that it was unable to accede to the request. Mr McKeefry said he had drawn attention to the strain which emergency work was placing on the medical superintendent (Dr. D. M. Logan).
