EYRE RIVER BED
STATE CAUSES CONCERN The state of the Eyre river bed, and to a lesser degree that of the Cust, has caused the trust considerable concern for some time past, said Mr C. T. Aschman in his annual address to the Waimakariri River Trust yesterday. That part of the revenue from the area received from rates and rents available for repair and maintenance is wholly Inadequate for any major work. A committee of the trust was appointed to confer with the ratepayers of the district, and at a meeting held at West Eyreton in April it was decided "to suggest to the trust that the rate should be raised sufficiently - to carry out the necessary work, and that an endeavour be made to obtain a Government subsidy.” Committees of the ratepayers were let up (1) to approach the Government for assistance by way of subsidy and (2) to approach frontage owners on the Eyre river to get them to consent to Permit the necessary embankments to be constructed on their freehold without the trust becoming liable for land purchases or payment for compensation.
