MILK FOR SCHOOLS
COMMITTEEMEN COMPLAIN OF LACK OF SUPPLY
Some delegates complained last evening at the annual meeting of the Canterbury School Committees’ Association both as to the quantity of supplies and the quality of milk that has been delivered to certain schools since the last holidays. It was decided to defer discussion on this question until the next meeting of delegates in a month’s time. In the meantime, all available information from school committees will bo obtained. It was also resolved to approach the Education Board for information on similar lines, which is likely to be obtained from a questionnaire now being sent to headmasters. In response to a request for information from the association, the manager of United Dairies. Ltd. (Mr John Harris), replied that the trouble concerning inadequate deliveries was due to the shortage of transport. However, his company hoped to obtain additional vehicles.
The chairman (Mr J. D. Gray): I think it would be advisable to defer the matter for a month, though that is not going to improve the situation, in my opinion, as far as United Dairies are concerned.
“And in the meantime.” interjected a delegate, “our children are going without milk.” The Milk Commission which sat m Christchurch recently, said Mr C. D. W. L. Sheppard, had been assured by the company that the milk supply was adequate for all purposes, but the question of transport had not been raised by Mr Harris on that occasion. “It is up to us to press the Health Department to see that milk is delivered to our children,” he said, “and it is up to the company to rectify the situation. On his own statement, according to Mr Harris, milk is available."
