VICE-REGAL (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 8. The Governor-General (Sir Cyril Newall), attended by Major C. J. Holland-Martin, visited a United States Marine Corps camp this afternoon. The Hon. W. Lee Martin, M.P. for Raglan, is visiting Greymouth. The honour of life membership was accorded to the retiring president, Mr F. S. Norrie. and to Mr C. R. N, Mackie by members of the Canterbury School Committees’ Association at the annual meeting in Christchurch last evening. Tribute to the memory of Mr G. W. Armitage and Mr J. G, Poison, who were both prominent in the educational life of Canterbury, was paid by members of the Canterbury School Committees' Association at their annual meeting in Christchurch last evening. Mr C. S. Thompson, of St, Albans, received the congratulations of members of the Canterbury School Committees’ Association last evening on being elected treasurer for the twentyseventh year. A motion of condolence was passed at yesterday’s meeting of the Board of Governors of Canterbury Agricultural College to the widow and family of the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates in their recent bereavement. In proposing the motion the chairman of the board (Mr W, O. Rennie) referred to the greai loss the country had sustained by Mr Coates’s death. Members realised what he had done for New Zealand, particularly in recent years as a member of the War Cabinet.
