FIRE IN WASTE DEPOT

About 9.30 o’clock last evening, fire gutted the large bins in front of the Godley statue in Cathedral square, in which waste material is deposited awaiting transport to the Reclamation Depot. The Christchurch Central Fire Brigade arrived to find the contents of the bins well ablaze. The bins themselves were badly charred-before the fire was suppressed. It is reported that the outbreak was caused by a lighted match thrown into the bin by a person standing nearby. Efforts to locate the culprit were unsuccessful.
