TURF GOSSIP Withdrawn Edward was not produced at Wingatul on Saturday as he had shin soreness earlier in the week. , He ran a good race for a novice on the first day and was expected to show improvement in Saturday's event. Below Expectations Benevolent, although taking third money in his race at Wingatui, did not give a very creditable display as he again mixed some fair Jumping with faulty efforts. He narrowly missed falling twice, the second occasion being when Feather Lassie, who brought him down on the first day, fell in front of him about four furlongs from home. When Benevolent won over the Riccarton country last year, it was thought that the right game had been found for him but he has not carried on as expected. He is. however, to be kept going as a steeplechaser and will be given another opportunity at Washdyke next month. In New Quarters Amorlad was taken delivery of at Wingatui on Saturday by F. Christmas, and was railed to Riccarton by Saturday night's special train conveying horses back from the Dunedin meeting. He may be nominated for the Wellington meeting, and if so, it will be interesting to see how he will fare at the hands of a North Island handicapper. Slight Trouble Rawhamai ricked himself when working at Wingatui on Friday, and as he was still suffering from the effects on Saturday morning, It was decided to withdraw him from his engagement. The trouble was unfortunate for his owner, Mr A. L. Power, who made an overnight trip to Dunedin to see him race. Two Outings Alpine, winner of the Novice Handicap at Wingatui on Saturday, is a three-year-old colt by Captain Bunsby from the English mare Spionetta, dam of Ruling Spi, Alpine is owned by Mr D. M, Tweedie and is trained at Riverton by ,T. Langford. He was produced again In the concluding event, and, rehandicapped lib for his win, shaped well over a middle distance. He took a wide course over the concluding stages and finished fast wide out, just failing to beat Patria for third money. No Improvement Trapeze was expected to show improvement at Wingatui on Saturday, but disappointed badly and was never likely at any stage.
Slightly Overdue Nightcalm was seen to advantage In winning the June Hurdles at Wingatui. He was not allowed to go to the front as in former races, but kept in behind the leaders, and he jumped better than previously. Heidelberg, who made the expected improved showing after his first day’s race, looked to be the winner at the last fence, but Nightcalm worried him out of the honours in the last few strides. Taxpayer was In keen demand in this race, but appeared to get into trouble at some of his fences, and a bad jump half a mile from ho,me settled any chance he had of making up leeway in the final stages.
Riding Home’s Success Banco ran one of his few good races In the Southern Hack Handicap at Wingatui. In spite of his big weight, 9-7, he disputed the lead with Royal Brief throughout, and they were fighting out the finish when Riding Home swooped down on them in the last furlong and beat them comfortably. Banco appeared to have Royal Brief in trouble nearing the post, but the latter got up to gain a narrow verdict. Riding Home is a threc-ycar-old filly by Siegfried from the Australian-bred Homedale, and Is trained bv D. P. Wilson for her breeder, Mr A. Chisholm. The favourite in this race. Fair Trial, stopped on the mark and took no part in the race, while Renarde also dwelt badly and did not move off until the field was well on its way. Small but Good
The ponifled Whirr gave a dashing display to win the Wingatui Steeplechase on Saturday. He and Merry Simon raced abreast in front until the latter dropped back about half a mile from home, and Whirr was left with a useful lead. Gay Boa, however, commenced a promising run from this stage, which brought him close up to Whirr and Anglo-French at the last fence, and he gradually drew up to be almost on terms with this pair half a furlong from home. The trio then settled down to a gruelling tussle, but Whirr hung on tenaciously to secure a half-head success from Gay Boa, with Anglo-French, who weakened nearing the line a close third. Whirr is trained by A. J Cassells for Mr L. C. Hazlett, who was not able to be at the meeting owing to illness. This was the first winter racing at Wingatui Mr Hazlett has missed for many years. Master Dingle struggled on for fourth place, about 10 lengths away, after a mixed display of jumping. He narrowly missed falling at the stand double and was always a long way back. Valantua and Valens rah poor races. Merry Simon evidently broke down when he went back, as he walked in very lame. Favourites Beaten Platform was looked upon as a likely propisition at Wingatui if soft going prevailed. but the firm ground on Saturday did not prevent him from winning the Provincial Handicap. Bashful Lady appeared to have the race in hand when she led into the straight, but Platform, who carried 3’,lb over-weight, wore her down with a long-sustained run, and snatched victory in the last stride. Kevin was much better placed than on the previous day. but although finishing a close third, he had no chance with the pair in front. Palfrey was well back for the first mile and did not appear to respond to his rider’s efforts until the closing stages were reached. He certainly finished on well and was only a length from
