ACCIDENTS
JOCKEY KILLED IN STEEPLECHASE HORSE FALLS WHILE LEADING FIELD (P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 5. Tragedy marked the opening of the Auckland Racing Club’s winter meeting at Ellerslie to-day, when Brien Evans, aged 19, was killed by his mount, Kaspian, falling in the Greenlane Steeplechase. Kaspian was racing in the lead with Abbey Lu at the time. Death occurred instantaneously. Evans had served his apprenticeship with his father, J. H. Evans, at Tauranga. MAN STRUCK BY CAR DEATH FOLLOWS MISHAP (P.A.) DUNEDIN, June 6. A fatal accident occurred on the Anderson’s Bay road at 8.10 p.m. on Saturday, when Douglas Ranfurly Neville. aged 34. of Omakau, a married man with two children, was struck by a motor-car. Neville, who died shortly after admission to hospital, had apparently alighted from a car and was crossing the street when he was struck by another car. JOCKEY SERIOUSLY INJURED (P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 6. Serious injuries were suffered by Albert Edward Ellis, aged 38, of Christchurch, when his mount, Evans Head, fell at the fourth fence while running prominently in the Great Northern Hurdles. Ellis suffered concussion, an injury to the spine, and a possible fracture of the thigh. Evans Head, which won four races in five starts last season, and which won the Winter Hurdles at Trentham last July, had to be destroyed.
GUNSHOT WOUND IN HEAD William Richmond Byers, aged 57 years, of 27 Jackson street. Timaru, was admitted to the Timaru Public Hospital yesterday suffering from a fractured skull and lacerations of the brain, caused by the discharge of a shotgun. Late last evening his condition was reported as still serious.
