Trades Courses.—The increase of 560 students attending day and evening classes this year at both the Christchurch and Papanui Technical Colleges, mainly due to the greater number of students taking up trades courses, was favourably commented upon at a meeting of the Board of Governors of the Christchurch Technical College. The principal (Dr. D. E. Hansen) said in a report that in the evening classes a number of young men under 20 years of age had been released from the mili. tary camps and that the demand for the varied types of training that could be provided in this kind of educational institution was greater than ever. There had been an increase of 230 enrolments this year in the trades classes alone at the Christchurch Technical College, and an increase of 35 at the Papanui Technical College. The return of enrolments in both day and evening classes showed the largest yet recorded in spite of war conditions, he added, and with reasonable building accommodation the college could be of even greater service to the community than it is now,
Heavy rain fell at Ashburton during the early hours of yesterday morning, a total of 92 points being recorded at the Ashburton Domain. This is the heaviest fall since March 11, when 103 points were registered.
