CONSENT OF PARENTS
Sir, —is it not a fact that a girl of 18 years must have her parents' consent (or the consent of one parent) before entering the Army? Two months ago my daughter wrote us that she had filled in the application papers and was to go up for examination in one month's time. My husband immediately notified the Army 7 Office. Christchurch, that he refused consent to his daughter entering the Army as she is only 18 years of age. No answer was received to this letter, and my daughter now informs us that she has passed her medical examination and is to proceed to camp on June 4. As the Army Office has ignored my husband's letter, it looks as if a parent's consent is not really necessary.—Yours, etc., MOTHER. May 31, 1943. [This letter was referred to the Dis- [ trict Commandant, W.A.A.C, who made the following reply: "In the application for enlistment form paragraph 24 ! there is a statement which must be signed by parents or guardian if the applicant is under 21 years. The parent or guardian must certify that the daughter or ward has his or her full consent to make this application, and join any branch of the armed forces for the duration of the war." If this consent was not given, she added, the application for enlistment would not be 'proceeded with. 'Mother' was advised to write to the District Commandant W.A.A.C, Southern Military District, Christchurch, stating full particulars, and investigations would be made. There is no record of any letter being received from the father.]
