DISTRICT E.P.S. CONTROLLER
Sir,—l wish to protest strongly against the decision of the central executive of the E.P.S. to appoint a district controller at a salary of £6OO a year. Under voluntary services last year . a fine organisation of wardens, fire patrols, police, and commercial fire services was in effective operation, and under present arrangements, after a month’s special training, the organisation will be largely in the hands of district wardens, and a paid official will not be warranted. I wonder what are the reactions of the Mayor and the central executive to the reported statements of Rear-Admiral Wilkinson that since January the safety of New Zealand had been further consolidated and any Japanese advance could be intercepted and broken up by land and carrier-based aircraft? The success of the E.P.S. depends largely upon the enthusiastic co-operation of the wardens, and this is likely to be jeoparised by the proposed appointment.—Yours, etc., DISTRICT WA.RDEN. June 4. 1943.
