THE LAST WAR
Sir,—On September 6, 1914, a month after the war began, the Germans were in sight of Paris. The Germans could easily have cut through to the Channel ports, but did not. Through this oversight they never reached the Channel ports. On April 22, 1915, the Germans at Ypres released poison gas on the Allies. The Allies were unprotected. and battalions fell back, The wind beat the Germans’ new weapon. June, 1916. was the darkest month of the war. Germany and Austria swept down the alps against Italy. The ram beat Germany. In the spring of 1917 German scientists boasted that they would have a record potato crop. Blight beat the Germans here. In November. 1917, the German submarine strength was at its highest. In March. 1918. the enemy began their final offensive in the west. Thev all but broke through the Allies’ defences, but Germany lost the war.—Yours, etc.. HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF. May 30, 1943.
